چکیده

The Association between two species of juvenile parrotfishes, Chlorurus sordidus and Scarus psittacus and an alga, Sargassum mangarvense was examined in Moorea French Polynesia. A number of treatments were constructed to test the relationships between size of an algal patch, the presence of algae and the juvenile fish. The relationship between the two species was also examined. Several existing plots of algae were cleared and transferred elsewhere. Over 6 days, the presence of juvenile parrotfishes increased on transplanted plots and decreased on cleared plots. The size of the patch does not determine number of individuals visiting each patch. A clear co-occurrence between C. sordidus and S. psittacus also exists.

Parrotfish grazing ability: interspecific differences in relation to jaw-lever mechanics and relative weight of adductor mandibulae on an Okinawan coral reef

Parrotfishes (family Labridae: Scarini) are regarded to have important roles for maintaining the ecosystem balance in coral reefs due to their removal of organic matter and calcic substrates by grazing. The purpose of the present study was to clarify the interspecific differences in grazing ability of five parrotfish species (Chlorurus sordidus, C. bowersi, Scarus rivulatus, S. niger and S. for...

Phylogenetic relationships and the evolution of regulatory gene sequences in the parrotfishes.

Regulatory genes control the expression of other genes and are key components of developmental processes such as segmentation and embryonic construction of the skull in vertebrates. Here we examine the variability and evolution of three vertebrate regulatory genes, addressing issues of their utility for phylogenetics and comparing the rates of genetic change seen in regulatory loci to the rates...

Growth and longevity in fishes of the family Scaridae

Systematic check-marks In the sagittal otollths from 6 species of scarids sampled fl-om the Great Bar~ier Reef, Australia, were used to develop size-at-age plots. The species were Chlorurus gibbus, C. sordidus, Scarus frenatus, S. niger. S. psittacus and S. nvulatus. Comparative information for a seventh specles, S. schelgeli, for which otolith increment data \*ere ava~lable. was also included....

Influence of sexual selection and feeding functional morphology on diversification rate of parrotfishes (Scaridae).

Scaridae (parrotfishes) is a prominent clade of 96 species that shape coral reef communities worldwide through their actions as grazing herbivores. Phylogenetically nested within Labridae, the profound ecological impact and high species richness of parrotfishes suggest that their diversification and ecological success may be linked. Here, we ask whether parrotfish evolution is characterized by ...

Patterns and processes in the evolutionary history of parrotfishes (Family Labridae)

Phylogenetic reconstruction of the evolutionary relationships among 61 of the 70 species of the parrotfish genera Chlorurus and Scarus (Family Labridae) based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences retrieved 15 well-supported clades with mid Pliocene/Pleistocene diversification. Twenty-two reciprocally monophyletic sisterspecies pairs were identified: 64% were allopatric, and the remainder...
